History of Tumblers: 50 Years and Counting
"I went to the office on Sedgwick, and tumbled outside for Mr. White. He watched, I tumbled, he tossed me a uniform and there we were." - JWTT Alum Joined: 1990.
In 1959, The Jesse White Tumbling Team (JWTT) sprung into action during its first appearance at the Rockwell Garden Field House in the Chicago Park District. For the next 50 years, JWTT, voluntarily lead by founder and coach Jesse White, soared to amazing heights, both in Chicago and around the world.
What started as a gym show has grown into a world-renowned tumbling team, tutoring program, and scholars program, awarding over $280,000 in collegiate financial aid during the past decade.
The 2010 team consists of 225 young men and women ages 6 and up, and the program has included nearly 12,000 kids over the past half century.
The JWTT participates in over 1,000 performances each year, gaining both national and international attention. From all over the United States and Canada, to Hong Kong, Japan, and the Cayman Islands, audiences of all ages have enjoyed the tumblers story and talent. Each year, the team is showcased at major sport and community events, as well as business and charity functions.
Since 1959, JWTT has provided recreational, athletic, educational and cultural enrichment to local underprivileged youth. With strict team requirements and a "tough love" approach, JWTT have created an outlet for kids to channel their energy, an academic program to keep them on the right track, and a scholarship program to provide the support they need. With the help of our community, we will continue this mission and sustainability for the next 50 years.

Coaches & Staff
Our Founder and Head Coach and current Illinois Secretary of State Hon. Jesse White started his vision for the tumblers half a century ago. He served six years as the Cook County Recorder of Deeds and 16 years in the Illinois State Legislature. He was also a teacher for thirty-three years, played professional baseball for the Chicago Cubs organization, served as a paratrooper in the United States Army's 101st Airborne Division, as well as served as a member of the Illinois National Guard. Since the team's inception in 1959, Jesse White has selflessly volunteered his time, money and energy to this program. Over the years his unwavering dedication to the youth of Chicago has resulted in him becoming a role model to nearly 12,000 tumblers to date.

It was fifty years ago that a small gym show with the Chicago Park District quickly became the Jesse White Tumbling Team. Half a century just doesn't seem possible, yet here we are. When we began this journey, our world was a much different place. What has remained constant, though, is our responsibility as adults to do all we can to help give young people the best possible chance to mature into productive and responsible individuals. The Jesse White Tumbling Team began with that in mind and through five decades, it has been our driving force.
Over the years, the incredible acrobatic performances of team members - nearly 12,000 strong - have been a source of enjoyment and entertainment for countless people all across the globe. Like many, I've looked on in awe at the athletic ability of these kids. But what fills my heart with pride is the knowledge of what is happening off the mats and away from the crowds.
These young men and women have chosen to follow a path to success by staying in school, avoiding illegal drugs and shunning gangs. Chicago and the world have seen their amazing potential and have helped them gain the confidence, desire and ability to pursue it. Of course, we could not have done it without the commitment of our current and future supporters.
With the celebration of our 50th year anniversary, the tendency is to look back and reflect on what has been accomplished, yet the best way we can continue to make a difference is to commit to the future. Fifty years ago we embarked on this mission with hope and resolve. Today, with our partners by our side, we move forward with renewed purpose and dedication.
Thank you to every member, volunteer, partner, advisor, and friend who has helped make it possible serve our youth. Here's to the next 50 years of helping kids soar to new heights!

"The Tumbling Team allowed me to see that there was more to life than the neighborhood, and not to judge a person by their economic status, but by their drive and their goals." - JWTT Alum Joined: 1992.
The Jesse White Foundation is a preventative organization that allows us to proactively promote positive social values. On average it costs the Illinois tax payers between $40,000- $60,000 annually to put one person in prison for one year. A Jesse White Tumbler uniform can be sponsored for $100.00. The team is made up of individuals who want to sincerely want to challenge themselves and surround themselves with others with the same goals and dreams.

The Jesse White Tumbling Team was created to provide a positive alternative for inner-city kids. The Training Program is specifically designed to enhance and develop the tumbling skills of the current trainees enrolled. This program teaches team members discipline and the expectations, theory and philosophy behind our organization.
The Training Program is free to all enrolled participants. Imbedded within the training is a strict no-tolerance rule with a "tough love" approach: no gangs, no drugs, and no alcohol. All tumblers must maintain a minimum of a "C" average in school in order to be considered in good standing with the program. Should tumblers fall below expectation, they are automatically enrolled in our Tutoring Program. Mr. White, Ms. Denne, and the head coaching staff reserve the right to terminate any participant for violating any of these rules and regulations.
Currently, participants train at either our Ada Park location on the south-side of Chicago, or at the Moody Bible Solheim Center on the near north-side of Chicago. However, working hand in hand with the Chicago Park District, we've taken the first steps toward establishing a Community Center on Chicago's west-side. Serving as both a resource for the community and tumblers, the new Community Center will promote physical training pursuits as well as in-service classes for educational programs.

The Jesse White Foundation strongly believes in a well-rounded education for our youth, providing them with skill-building opportunities in both athletics and academics. To help achieve this mission, the Jesse White Foundation founded our Tutoring Program in 2000.
We require our student athletes to maintain a minimum of a "C" average in their classroom setting. Should a team member or trainee fall below our standard, they are automatically enrolled in our Tutoring Program where we provide top-notch instruction to raise their academic expectations and results.
The Tutoring Program assists with homework, encourages independent reading, improves writing skills, spelling and handwriting, and practices basic math facts. It also improves science and social studies grades through enhancing study skills and helps members develop a higher level of critical thinking through group and individual work.
If Tumblers would prefer to enroll in a private tutoring program of their choice, proof of this enrollment and tracked progress would fulfill our rules and regulations.
Tutors Home
The tutoring sessions are held three times per week at our Ada Park location on the south-side of Chicago, and two times per week at the Moody Bible Solheim Center on the near north-side of Chicago. The Tutoring Program is staffed by certified and experienced teachers/volunteers to provide our student athletes with the resources and support they need in order to reach success.
For more information about the Jesse White Tutoring Program, please call Yvonne Jones at 312.943.4846.
Tutors Mission
Our equation for a healthy mind and an active lifestyle? Brain food. By offering them resources to enhance both academics and athletics simultaneously, we have found the answer to achieving that success.
A study by the United States Department of Justice & United States Department of Education shows that students who spent even one to four hours per week in extracurricular activities were 60 percent less likely to have dropped out of school by 12th grade than their peers who did not participate. Our Tutoring Program works cohesively with our Training Program to solidify these results.
By providing students with an athletic outlet to channel their energy and an academic program to keep them on the right track, we are able to directly impact their lives and help them become proactive members in society.
Achieving the Goal
Through strategic planning, we are able to achieve our goal of holding all tumblers and trainees accountable for maintaining the minimum "C" average academic standard. Understanding that each of our members have different learning styles and retain information in various ways, we are proud to offer a variety of teaching methods designed for the individual at hand. We also assist each of our members in understanding their different learning style, providing them with the appropriate study habits and note-taking skills to maximize their academic careers.
Report cards are reviewed after each marking period. Students must bring 2nd Quarter report cards for review (not progress reports). It is important to note that the majority of our members enrolled in our Tutoring Program continue with the tutoring services well after they have sustained the organization academic standards.
Students who are homeschooled must bring documentation from the City, on the City of Chicago letterhead, that confirms that they are being homeschooled. Students will not be permitted to audition for the athletic portion of our organization without a report card or homeschool documentation.

The Jesse White Foundation has taken the first steps toward establishing a site for a Community Center which will accommodate the Jesse White Tumblers as well as serve as a resource for the surrounding Chicago neighborhoods. The Foundation is partnered with the Chicago Park District for a site located on West Chicago Avenue near Sedgwick.
According to a study done by the U.S Department of Education, the creation of after-school activities provide many benefits to children, their families and the community at large. This implementation increases safety, reduces involvement in risk-taking behavior, and enhances educational resources. Our Community Center will stand as living proof of this, and we will proudly spread this message throughout the City of Chicago.
The Jesse White Community Center will serve as a safety net for Chicago's youth. It will be utilized as the Tumbler's home-base for a myriad of purposes including physical training pursuits, as well as in-service classes for educational programs to improve scholastic skills. It will also be opened to the public to enjoy athletic, educational, and recreational activities.

FACT: According to the Associated Press there are three times as many minorities living in state prisons than there are in college dorms. Studies show that dropping out of high school results in youth being more susceptible to arrest. By providing positive after school activities such as the Jesse White Tumbling and Tutoring Programs to Chicago's inner-city youth, we provide our youngsters the fighting chance they need to achieve academic, personal and professional success.
Charitable donations will benefit the development of the Jesse White Community Center. This will help sustain the north-west side of Chicago by providing the resources needed for the surrounding areas to thrive. At the core of our beliefs is the notion that when we invest in the education of young people, we invest in our community, thus donations will also benefit the scholarship funds and the Tutoring Program.
Advocate
We strongly believe in standing up against teenage violence and substance abuse. According to an ABC News report Chicago's inner-city youth are ten times more likely to become victims of gun violence than their suburban counterparts. It is also proven that families who are able to enroll their children in strong extra-curricular programs result in their children feeling safer and becoming more successful in school. The Foundation is in place to close the gap between the families that have this ability and the families that do not.
Writing your local officials, like your Alderman and Committeemen, in support of positive after-school activities and increased funding is a simple act that can go a long way in sustaining our community.
